Nikki Davis graduated from DePauw University with a Bachelor’s degree in biology. She went on to pursue a second Bachelor’s degree in PR & Advertising from the University of Southern Indiana. Her full time career has been with Audience Response Systems, Inc. since graduating college a semester early in 1999, but in her spare time she started her own photography business after the birth of her daughter in 2003. Since 2007, she has also been a freelance writer who has had the pleasure of writing for and being the cover photographer for Evansville Parent Magazine, being a contributing writer and photographer for Evansville’s eWoman magazine, and writing over 800 business-to-business articles for Work.com. She is an avid runner, an active member of the Junior League of Evansville, wife of State Farm agent Bob Davis, and mother of Mia and Cooper.
In 2008, her goal was to spend the year photographing children of all races, skin colors, beliefs, disabilities and abilities, and to make a book collection out of it. Inspired by a Dr. JoAnn Deak (http://www.deakgroup.com/deak/index.html) seminar that the Girl Scouts Rain Tree council put on in late 2007, one of the things that stuck out in her mind is that our children will need to learn to be adaptable as they grow up. Part of that adapting is accepting and befriending children who are different than they are. As they grow older, they will encounter an even greater melting pot of humanity than we’ve ever known. They will work along side people of different colors, different religions, different beliefs, and different abilities, and teaching our children to be tolerable and friendly to everyone will be a key social skill to bestow upon them as they continue to grow up.
This book is a tool for parents and teachers alike to introduce the concept of diversity. It is a way for children to embrace their uniqueness, and to celebrate the uniqueness of others. Please share in this journey of embracing our differences. Who we are is a gift, and teaching our children how to build each other up and accepting each other for who they are will help them grow into the people that they are meant to become.
